53 Universities Participate in Pencak Silat Women’s Championship
All India Inter-University Pencak Silat Women’s Championship 2025–26 Inaugurated at Desh Bhagat University
Mandi Gobindgarh, March 16: The All India Inter-University Pencak Silat Women’s Championship (2025–26) was officially inaugurated at Desh Bhagat University, bringing together women athletes from across the country for one of the most prestigious university-level martial arts competitions.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Dr. Harsh Sadawarty, Vice-Chancellor of Desh Bhagat University, who warmly welcomed team officials, technical officials and participants. In his address, he highlighted the growing importance of women’s participation in sports and encouraged athletes to pursue excellence with dedication and discipline.
A total of 53 university teams from across India are participating in the championship, reflecting the increasing popularity of Pencak Silat among women athletes nationwide. The event commenced with a grand march past by all participating teams.
The ceremony was graced by several distinguished dignitaries, including Guest of Honour Baljinder Singh Toor, Secretary of the Gatka Association of India and Dr. Gopal Partap Singh, Observer from the Association of Indian Universities. Other notable attendees included Dr. Kulbhushan Sharma, Director of Campus, Dr. Arshdeep Singh, Director of Students’ Welfare and Dr. Pravin Kumar, Director of Physical Education DBU.
Adding cultural vibrancy to the occasion, a Gatka martial arts performance captivated the audience and showcased the rich heritage and martial traditions of Punjab.
On the second day of the championship, intense competitions were held in various categories including Tanding, Tunggal, Regu, and Ganda. Women athletes from different universities displayed exceptional skill, determination, and sportsmanship, while jury members carefully monitored each bout to ensure fair play and strict adherence to competition rules.
The event was further dignified by the presence of Mukesh Kumar, SP Punjab, an international wrestling medalist and a strong promoter of sports.
The host institution, Desh Bhagat University, also welcomed Dr. Gopal Partap Singh, AIU Observer, who appreciated the excellent arrangements and efforts made in organizing the national-level event.
