Shri Harjit Singh Grewal, Hon’ble Chairman, National Commission for Minorities, today visited Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, and met Shri Mohanjeet Singh, a member of the Sikh minority community and resident of Village Sheron, District Sangrur, who is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The Hon’ble Chairman interacted at length with Shri Mohanjeet Singh and his family members and personally heard their account regarding the incident and the allegations raised before the Commission.
The complaint was received by the National Commission for Minorities from the family members of Shri Mohanjeet Singh on __________. The complaint relates to an incident dated 02.09.2026, during a “Lok Milni” program at Village Sheron, Sunam, Punjab.
As stated in the complaint, Shri Mohanjeet Singh allegedly displayed a black flag as a mark of protest concerning the issue of drug abuse in the State. It is alleged that he was subsequently taken into police custody and subjected to physical assault and torture, including beating, infliction of injuries and electric shocks.
The complaint further contains serious allegations regarding interference with his religious identity, including forcibly opening his door and pulling his hair and beard. Allegations have also been raised regarding the alleged mistreatment of his mother and sister by police personnel.
The Hon’ble Chairman took detailed note of the concerns raised by Shri Mohanjeet Singh and his family and also sought to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The National Commission for Minorities has already taken cognizance of the complaint and has written to the Director General of Police, Punjab, seeking a detailed report within 10 days.
The Commission has sought the factual position of the matter, details regarding the action taken so far, the status of the investigation/proceedings and other relevant information regarding the allegations raised in the complaint.
The Commission will examine the report received from the Punjab Police and, based on the facts and material placed before it, take such further action as may be appropriate within its mandate.

“I have personally met Shri Mohanjeet Singh and his family members today and heard their concerns in detail. The allegations placed before the National Commission for Minorities are serious, particularly those relating to alleged physical assault, custodial treatment and interference with his religious identity as a member of the Sikh minority community. Every citizen is entitled to dignity, respect and protection of his or her religious identity. We have already taken cognizance of the complaint and sought a detailed report from the DGP Punjab within 10 days. I expect the concerned authorities to ensure a fair, impartial and time-bound examination of the allegations and to place all relevant facts and records before the Commission further appropriate action within its statutory mandate.”
